“The Crown” Gets A Sixth Season After All

The show wrapped filming on its fourth season in March, just ahead of the U.K. being placed in lockdown. That fourth season, which sees Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II for her second and final outing in the role, is expected to launch later this year.

Imelda Staunton will take over the role of Elizabeth for the fifth season, and will now have two seasons playing the monarch like both Claire Foy and Colman before her. She’s joined by Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret with other roles to be cast soon.

Writer-creator Peter Morgan says in a statement: “As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons. To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day – it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”

Netflix has re-iterated that the sixth season, which will cover events up to the early 2000s, will be the final one.
