“Sabrina,” “Discovery,” “Titans” Dominate SVOD
Research film Parrot Analytics has issued their annual Global Television Demand Report and have revealed that Netflix controls 71% of the global subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) market – making it by far the biggest player. Also high were Amazon (11%), Hulu (9%) & CBS All Access (4%).
While SVOD services guard all official viewership data, the firm analyses data from ‘demand expression platforms’ in ten global markets including Canada, Mexico, Australia, Brazil and multiple European countries. The analysis takes in video streaming, social media, photo sharing, blogging, web and peer-to-peer platforms.
According to their 68-page report, SVOD platforms released 319 original series among them in 2018 which is up from 147 in 2017. Netflix dominated the originals category with 139 series premieres and spent $12 billion on its screen offerings – far higher than the $5 billion spent by Amazon and $2.5 billion by Hulu.
In terms of the most in-demand overall series, the four titles that keep cropping up worldwide are “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Titans” and “Stranger Things”. Also faring well were “Orange is the New Black,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Daredevil,” “Sense8,” “Black Mirror” and “Cobra Kai”.
