“Endgame” Surpasses “Avatar” At Box-Office
They kept it in cinemas longer than they originally planned in order to reach it, but Disney has finally done it with Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Endgame” surpassing “Avatar” to becoming the biggest film of all time worldwide (not adjusted for inflation) at the box-office.
As of the end of last weekend, ‘Endgame’ had pulled in $2,781,212,415 globally, just under $7 million shy of the $2,787,965,087 that “Avatar” had pulled in. ‘Endgame’ is still playing in cinemas though and for the full week of July 8th-14th, it scored approximately $8.52 million at the global box-office.
With the expected week-to-week drop-off it seemed the “Avatar” total would be topped sometime either this weekend or early next week. While independent stats sites like Box-Office Mojo have yet to call it, Walt Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn did during last night’s Marvel panel. Horn said in a statement:
“A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights. Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s Avatar remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience. The talented filmmakers behind these worlds have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora.”
A long-standing tradition for records like this being broken is the previous winner posts a graphic congratulating the new winner. In fact, Cameron already did so back in mid-May when ‘Endgame’ took over “Titanic” to become the second highest-grossing film internationally of all time. Marvel congratulated “Jurassic World” for beating its opening weekend record, and last year Lucasfilm congratulated Marvel when ‘Infinity War’ topped the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opening weekend record.
The graphic for this record breakage has not been posted as yet, but will be added below when it is.
