“Bird Box” Is Netflix’s Biggest Film Launch
Netflix’s supernatural thriller “Bird Box” has reportedly scored the biggest seven-day viewership of all the streamer’s original movie releases to date.
In a statement on Friday, the company reports that just over 45 million member accounts have watched the movie in the first week since its debut December 21st worldwide on Netflix. The Sandra Bullock-starrer also has spawned a whole swath of internet memes since its release.
Bullock plays a single mother trying to save her kid’s lives after mysterious forces cause people who witness it to turn insane and immediately suicidal. Survivors navigating the post-apocalyptic world must wear blindfolds or be exposed to supernatural entities that embody their deepest fears.
That 45 million number cannot be independently verified, but would represent about one-third of their entire user base. Other audience metrics for Netflix content (like Nielsen) are very limited in scope and often don’t cover mobile, PC and overseas viewing.
The film has garnered decent but soft reviews with just a 66% on Rotten Tomatoes.
