Bird Box Is Most Watched Netflix Original Movie in First Week
Netflix’s Bird Box holds the record for most streams in a single week on the platform. According to the streaming giant, the horror movie, which stars Sandra Bullock, has been streamed over 40 million times since it was released last week, knocking David Ayer’s Bright to second place. The Netflix Twitter account posted the achievement today with a celebratory message, which you can read below.
“Took off my blindfold this morning to discover that 45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched Bird Box – best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film!”
Bird Box has been all over social media since it was released last week. The horror movie is notable for not showing the monster, but that wasn’t always going to be the case. At one point, the producers insisted on showing one of the monsters during a scene with Sandra Bullock’s Malorie character. Bullock said that it was “a green man with a horrific baby face,” but admits that it made her laugh, so they cut the scene because it looked so ridiculous.
The Netflix original horror movie has also gotten some pretty lackluster reviews, with many comparing it to A Quiet Place. However, there are many horror fans that stand behind the movie, with iconic author Stephen King being one of them. King says that he found the movie to be “riveting” and says that some of the mediocre reviews might stem from the fact that the movie is a Netflix original and didn’t premiere in theaters. Others have called Bird Box the scariest thing that they have ever seen.
Another sign of Bird Box‘s popularity is the incredible amount of memes that it has spawned in only seven days. A quick search on social media shows off a ton of memes spoofing the movie and certain major parts, especially the drawings of the monster that are quickly shown when the Gary character reveals them. It’s easy to see why Netflix has their biggest hit to date with Bird Box after a search through social media. There’s everything from debates, theories, and then the incredible wealth of memes that have been created in just seven days.
It seems that not showing the monster in Bird Box was a very wise decision in the end. The mystery is keeping the movie alive on social media, inviting all kinds of talk and speculation about it. Whatever the case may be, Netflix is riding another wave of success, which could be short lived. The Black Mirror movie Bandersnatch premiered today, which could easily end up taking over the number one spot with the loyal following from the show alone. Adding to the allure is the fact that it’s Netflix’s first choose-your-own-adventure movie for adults with a ton of different possibilities and over 5 hours of footage.
