Avengers: Endgame Will Earn Robert Downey Jr. a Staggering $75M Payday

Robert Downey Jr. is going to be cashing one heck of a paycheck for his work in Avengers: Endgame, as the Iron Man actor is said to be earning around $75 million for his troubles. Downey helped kick off the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has become the most reliable brand in all of entertainment, back in 2008 as Tony Stark in the first Iron Man. Since then, he’s become the face of the series and that has led to one massive payday for what is likely his final movie in the franchise.

According to a new report, Robert Downey Jr. was paid around $20 million upfront for Avengers: Endgame. However, the bulk of his money is coming from his share of the profits. The actor is said to have an 8 percent share. To date, the movie has grossed $2.77 billion worldwide and, while it may make a few more bucks before it’s removed from theaters, that’s the bulk of what will be brought in. It’s estimated that Marvel has made about $700 million in profit, which means RDJ is entitled to approximately $55 million, bringing his insane total to $75 million for just one movie.

That’s not bad for a guy who was largely viewed as unemployable by Hollywood prior to his turn as Tony Stark. Many of the other Marvel heroes are walking away with big checks too. Bradley Cooper, who voices Rocket Raccoon, for example, owns 1 percent of the profits and will see about $7 million. Marvel notoriously doesn’t pay their actors nearly as much to start, but their long-term deals become increasingly more lucrative as time marches on.

Together, it’s estimated in the report that Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and Chris Evans (Captain America) made $340 million last year, when counting what they brought in outside of the MCU. Though, the bulk of it was from their work as costumed heroes. Entertainment lawyer David Chidekel had this to say.

“Celebrities such as Downey and Johansson currently have extreme leverage to demand enormous compensation packages from studios investing hundreds of millions of dollars in making tent-pole films, such as The Avengers series… A studio’s incentive to grant contingent compensation to various actors, writers, directors and other key personnel is simple. Movie studios depend upon tent-pole films to support their financial performance.”

It was previously reported that Scarlett Johansson will be getting a similar $20 million upfront payout for her upcoming Black Widow solo movie. While those massive salaries surely eat into Disney/Marvel’s profits more than a little bit, the MCU to date has grossed more than $22 billion and they’re the faces of these various franchises. The studio is smart enough to pay them what it takes in order to keep this train on the tracks. This news comes to us via Forbes.
