‘Avengers: Endgame’ the Most Anticipated Release of 2019
For the second year in a row, Marvel has the top two most anticipated blockbusters, according to Fandango’s annual survey of moviegoers. Avengers: Endgame, the follow-up to last year’s number one, the cliffhanging Avengers: Infinity War, took first place, while another standalone solo superhero entry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel, takes the secondary spot filled in 2018 by Black Panther.
The rest of the 10 most anticipated blockbusters releasing in 2019 include Marvel’s other upcoming superhero sequel, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and the still untitled Star Wars: Episode IX, which will conclude the Skywalker Saga storyline begun back in 1977. Two additional sequels place on the list: Pixar’s Toy Story 4 and M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, a follow-up to Unbreakable and Split.
Disney is clearly about to have a great year. Besides their three Marvel releases (Spider-Man: Homecoming is a co-production with Sony) and the Star Wars and Toy Story sequels, the studio’s three upcoming live-action reimagining of animated classics The Lion King, Aladdin, and Dumbo fill out a good chunk of the list. (Glass will be released by Universal in the U.S. and Canada but Disney will distribute internationally.)
Fandango broke down anticipated titles into other genres, as well. Toy Story 4 tops the list of most anticipated animated movies, with other sequels including Disney’s Frozen 2, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and The Secret Life of Pets 2. Other anticipated comic book movies include DC’s Joker and Shazam!. For horror, audiences are most looking forward to the sequel It: Chapter Two and Us, Jordan Peele’s follow-up to Get Out.
Moviegoers also named their picks for which actors and actresses they’re excited about in 2019, including movie stars on the rise. Topping the list of most anticipated actors is Tom Hanks as Fred Rogers (aka Mister Rogers) in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and reprising his voice as Woody in Toy Story 4 and the male stars of Avengers: Endgame and Glass. The most anticipated actresses are Captain Marvel lead Brie Larson and her fellow female stars of Avengers: Endgame.
This year’s list of favorite rising stars to look out for is topped by the actress Naomi Scott, who plays Jasmine in Disney’s Aladdin remake and one of the title trio of Charlie’s Angels, and her co-lead in Aladdin, actor Mena Massoud. Moviegoers also named Stranger Things breakout Millie Bobby Brown, who can be seen in the upcoming sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Winston Duke in Us and, reprising his Black Panther role, Avengers: Endgame.
